The Confident Black On The Troubled Surface
Shiva Yourdkhani
Delgosha gallery is pleased to announce “The Confident Black On The Troubled Surface” the first solo exhibition by Shiva Yourdkhani. Shiva Yourdkhani has changed the sense of depth in her previous landscapes with a shallow pictorial space. The artificial sense of spotlights has been replaced by incisions that are filled with vivid colors and glow on dark surfaces. Her landscapes that were shaped gradually are now incomplete landscapes and the act of painting and improvisation have shaped them. She cuts and pastes pieces of paper in order to draw. It’s a technique that defines pictorial space and gives her paintings a bold and expressive look. The inherent capacity of form becomes inseparable from the act and process of making an image. Acts such as cutting paper, attaching and removing it opens the form up in order to continue it in the time. She has switched the “either/or” oppositions to choosing “both”: depth and flatness, negative and positive space, figure and ground, constructing and destructing, figuration and abstraction. A painting is not the end of the story for her. The painting acts as pictorial triggers that opens up the process to the viewer, shaping an ever-evolving and unpredictable process that evokes a deep and aesthetic reaction. She has participated in many group shows including Delgosha’s recent group show “Badha”.
